I volunteered to design and build the entire infrastructure behind Rotary's district 1930 digital membership passes.

How it started#

When my father complained about the many plastic cards in his physical wallet, I wanted to code a solution. It had to be digital, and since he’s an iPhone user, it had to live in the Apple Wallet app. One of his cards was his Rotary membership card, and because Rotary is pretty big and has some impact in the world, I figured a digital pass for Rotary would be the biggest challenge to tackle. I was definitely right on that one ;)

What I built#

The best way to make this accessible to a lot of people with good UX is an app — adding a pass to something like Apple Wallet is most intuitive from a native iOS app. So I went with a stack of Swift, SwiftUI, Node.js and Express.js to build an experience where the user just enters their Rotary member information (first name, last name, member ID, …) and then creates the pass and adds it to Apple Wallet. I published the app (RO.Pass) on the App Store and many members are already using it. I’m currently also working on an Android version. Because of the demand, the app was featured on the official Rotary Blog and in a monthly Rotary magazine.
